If you’ve begun to experience sensitive teeth after your smile makeover Newton Abbot, then this one’s for you. We, at the practice of Presh Mulay, hope that you won’t experience sensitivity after whitening, but if you do there’s no need to worry. Here’s how to take care of your sensitive teeth.

Having a smile makeover Newton Abbot

We want all our patients to feel happy and confident about their smile and at our practice we believe in a holistic approach to doing this. A smile makeover Newton Abbot is the term we use for combining various cosmetic procedures to achieve the dental look you aspire to.

One of the most common forms of cosmetic dentistry that offers fantastic results is teeth whitening.

What types of whitening do we offer?

We offer an at-home teeth whitening service that partners professional whitening with the convenience of use at home. You will have moulds made of your teeth here at the practice and then spend two weeks applying the whitening gel to whiten your teeth to a high level of shine over the next two weeks.

We also offer in-practice whitening which is great for same day results.

Why might teeth become sensitive?

There’s no one reason why you might have sensitive teeth after whitening. All patients are different and have a different response to the product used to whiten. In most cases we find there are no issues with sensitivity.

Symptoms of sensitivity

If you are experiencing some form of sensitivity you will likely be experiencing one or more of the following: discomfort or pain when air hits your teeth, sharp shocks when exposed to cold or hot food or drinks, pain when eating sugary foods or acidic foods, or discomfort when brushing.

Sensitivity occurs when the treatment has removed minerals from your enamel. This can be fixed and isn’t really something to be worried about.

Helping your sensitivity

There are a few things you can do at home to help with sensitive teeth, but you should come and see us at the practice just to check there’s nothing more serious going on.

At home we recommend you take some time off from your home whitening treatment. Use a toothpaste such as Sensodyne as this contains properties to numb your teeth. Use a mouthwash and toothpaste that contain fluoride as this will help build back your teeth’s natural protective layer.

Moving forward

If after implementing all the above tactics you still aren’t noticing any difference, then you should come back to us at the practice so we can see what we can do moving forward. In some cases teeth whitening might not be right for you and we can look at other ways to help your smile. We might also re-evaluate your smile makeover plan and try to space out your whitening to ease off the effects of whitening.

Finally, teeth whitening rarely causes sensitivity now as the products are so well designed, so we would encourage all patients to explore this option with us if they believe it will improve their quality of life.
